Note this is a GNOME 1.4 bug, may well be gone now.

Basically what is happening is that the greeter was crashing.  Some
bugs like this were in fact fixed as far as I remember.  Since I have
no clue what is going on (and from the info provided I don't think I
can find out) and this is a GNOME 1.4 bug I'll mark it INCOMPLETE
