GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 325557
Switch back to the 2.6 viewer
Last modified: 2006-03-24 11:30:33 UTC
Please switch back to the 2.6 view/browse switching behaviour (with one click one the folder icon) and browse icons in the viewer. There's no need for a viewer like the one introduced in 2.7; people who like something like this can use Eye of GNOME. People who don't like this have no choice anymore except using non-GNOME software like GQView.
I second that. Please at least add an easy way to chose which view you see at startup. Right now you are forced to the simple view, when you open an image.
gthumb is still an image browser, however when you open a single image you get the viewer window instead of the browser window. If you want to browse the image folder use the 'File->Go to the image folder' command. If you want to browse a folder without opening the viewer window, right-click on the folder icon and choose 'Open with gthumb' You have another alternative too: when the viewer window opens check 'View->Single Window', this way next time you click on an image the window will be reused: this way you can use Nautilus as the browser and gthumb as the viewer.

Getting the image viewer when one double-clicks an image in Nautilus is an improvement. This is not my problem. (Sorry, Holger! ;-) ) My bug report is about two things: 1.) Open the image viewer, then click the first menu icon on the left (the 'folder'): You get a list of applications including gThumb. Click gThumb, and the image viewer opens a second time! Repeat and you'll get a third instance of gThumb with the same image. I consider this a bug, and it probably is one even from a spacial perspective. I know I can prevent the behaviour by using the small drop down widget to the right. However, switching from viewer (back) to the browser is probably one of the actions I use most in gThumb's viewer. Thus, it should have a usual icon with proper screen real estate so people like me don't need to pay attention to do so, not to mention the additional mouse clicks. 2.) No 'View next image', 'View previous image' buttons anymore in the image viewer. These are the actions I use also very often in the viewer. It deserves some screen real estate. I'm sorry if the first report was not clear enought. gThumb is one of my most beloved apps since I use GNOME. The change reminds me about the introduction of spacial Nautilus; and this makes me somewhat nervous. :-/
I just commited a patch to CVS that I think fixes both things: 1) you do not get gthumb in the applications list anymore, since it was confusing, see bug #307959. And I added the "go to image folder" command in the "open with" popup menu, to ease the way to open the browser window. 2) note that you are confusing the viewer window with the viewer mode in the browser window. the latter still has the "prev image" / "next image" commands in the toolbar.
With regard to point 2, made by Paolo Bacchilega, (inverted commas use for my emphasis'. "note that you are 'confusing' the 'viewer window' with the 'viewer mode' in the 'browser window'". There are three key terms 'viewer window', 'viewer mode', and 'browser window'. All similar enough for someone unfamiliar with the anatomy of a desktop environment to be truly 'confusing'. I just wonder how 'confusing', that will read in Yelp, especially for someone new to Linux, much less Gnome. Not to mention trying to explain to a new user why an identically named application behaves so differently depending on how it was opened. Please return to the previous ie. 2.6.x style of doing things, or at least include an option to switch the newer 'simplyfied' method off. Even if it involves using GConf to do so. Sorry to say this but I find this "feature", highly annoying, as it introduces an element of inconsitency.
I would also prefer that if I open an image file from nautilus, then it opens in the "viewer mode" in the "browser window". (That is, the image is displayed, and the "Next" button etc. is immediately available.) My usual use of gthumb is to just "look at my photos". I click around in nautilus, see a photo I like, and open it in gthumb. I would then like to be able to seamlessly continue browsing around with gthumb. The suggested workaround is an annoyance, and won't be discovered by most users: one has to do "File --> Go to image folder", then locate the file again in the thumbnail view, and double-click it to get back to view mode. This seems too much. At least it would be good to be able to have a command-line flag to tell gthumb to open in the desired mode.
I agree with #7, searching the "why" this feature (in Ubuntu dapper) I arrived here.

now default behaviuor is to use the browser mode, you can still use the viewer with the --viewer command line option.
Thank you very much! :-)
