GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 170452
gnome-typing-monitor disappears from notification area via keyboard dialog
Last modified: 2007-02-05 17:27:06 UTC
This bug has been opened here: https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/6826 "Overview Description: gnome-typing-monitor disappears from the notifications area when managed via the keyboard dialog. There is no apparent way to get it back via the keyboard dialog. Steps to Reproduce 1) Open the Keyboard dialog Computer->Desktop Preferences->Keyboard 2) Select the Typing Break tab 3) Tick the Lock screen option 4) Close dialog 5) Right-click on typing break icon in notification area 6) Select Preferences 7) Deselect Lock screen Actual Results The typing-break icon disappears from the notifications area and will not reappear using the keyboard dialog toggle. Expected Results The icon should remain in the bar, but greyed out. This is the behaviour if you run gnome-typing-manager independently. The gnome-typing-monitor via the Computer->Desktop Preferences->Keyboard dialog enables and works fine. However, if I disable it by toggling the Lock Screen, it disappears from the notification area, and does not return when I try to toggle it on again. If I start the gnome-typing-monitor from the command line, it greys out the icon in the notifications area instead."
Hm, are you suggesting that it should ALWAYS be visible in the tray no matter if it's enabled or disabled?
I have this problem as well. I have just been doing a killall -HUP gnome-panel to bring it back
Does this happen every time you disable it? That is, does it never come back when you enable the toggle again?
I get this too in ubuntu but I've never seen it before in 2.10. Could it be some ubuntu/debian specific thing?
Comment #3: It never comes back, once it's gone, it's gone. However, if you enter gnome-typing-monitor in the console, the icon will reappear and work as expected. That means that it will be greyed out (with black) when you disable the toggle and activate when you activate it. Updating version to 2.14 since I can reproduce it (with ubuntu dapper).
Oh, I can reproduce it too now :) I'll take a look.
It works perfectly for me with upstream gnome. This looks like it's due to some ubuntu patch.
It looks like it's caused by the 16_gsd-reaper-no-iopipe.patch. I have no idea what that patch is for. Sebastien, will you look into that? We should close this bug here.
Oops, I didn't really mean to close it just yet. Reopening until we know a bit more about what's happening.
OK, no feedback anyway. Since this works with stock gnome, and not with the ubuntu/debian patch, I'll close it and let the ubuntu people handle it on their side.

For information the Ubuntu patch was added as a workaround to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/control-center/+bug/8678
